Nun: The Timeless, Inert Waters of Pre-Creation in the Pyramid Texts

Before light, before gods, before the first word was spoken, there was Nun—not a deity to be worshipped, but the eternal, fundamental state of all that is and could be.

In our search for the origins of Egyptian pre-creation, we sometimes look to complex pantheons like the Ogdoad. But to understand the beginning, we must start from our earliest sources. The Pyramid Texts of Unas (c. 24th century BCE)—the oldest sacred corpus in the world—point not to a group of eight gods, but to a singular, profound reality: Nun (𓈗). Far from "watery chaos," Nun is the primordial, pre-creational substance defined by timelessness, inertia, and the total absence of creation. It is the cosmic womb, simultaneously static and cyclical, from which all life, order, and divinity emerge.
The Hieroglyph and the Name: The Primeval Waters
The name Nun (𓈗) is written with the glyph for water (three wavy lines). In the Pyramid Texts, it is never depicted as a humanoid god. It is the element itself: the endless, cosmic ocean. This is our first clue: Nun is not a neter (divine force) in the same way Ra or Shu is. It is the pre-condition from which neteru arise. It is the undifferentiated source, the "raw material" of existence before the divine intelligence (neter) began its work of differentiation.
The Three Defining Qualities of Nun in the Pyramid Texts of Unas
The Utterances for King Unas describe Nun not through myth, but through direct statements of its nature.
1. Timeless & Eternal
Nun exists outside of time as we know it. It is the ever-present source.
PT 301 (Unas): "Nun is there, the waters are there, as they were at the First Time (sp tpy), before strife came into being."
Meaning: Nun simply is. It is described as existing in its original state, referencing the "First Time" (Zep Tepi), the moment of first creation. Nun is the backdrop of eternity itself.
2. Inert & Without Movement
This is the core quality. Before creation, the universe was in a state of suspended, static potential.
PT 527 (Unas): The Creation Utterance: This is the definitive text. It describes the state within Nun before the god Atum acts:
"The sky had not yet come into being, The earth had not yet come into being... The children of the earth (mankind) had not yet been fashioned...
There was no tumult, no contentious voice. There was no noise, no voice, no sound.
There was no movement (𓀠 nn jw)."
Meaning: This is a description of perfect cosmic inertia. Nun is not "chaotic" in the sense of turbulence; it is the utter stillness and silence of pure, undifferentiated potential. No life, no sound, no action.
3. The State "Without Creation"
Nun is defined by what it lacks: the differentiated forms of the later cosmos.
Continuation of PT 527: The same utterance lists all that was not yet born. The presence of Nun is the absence of created things. It is the blank canvas.
The Dual Nature: Static Source & Cyclical Conduit
1. The Static Source (Pre-Creation): This is Nun as described above—the inert, timeless waters.
2. The Cyclical Conduit (Post-Creation): Once creation begins, Nun does not disappear. It becomes the celestial ocean that surrounds the ordered world (Ma'at), serving as a pathway for cyclical renewal.
PT 255 (Unas): "Unas has arisen as the Great One... He ferries over to the horizon on the waterways of Nun."
PT 272 (Unas): "Unas is one who encircles the Two Lands... He navigates the Great Flood which is in Nun."
PT 366 (Unas): "Cleansed is Unas... in the Field of Rushes which is in Nun."
Meaning: The king, like the sun god Ra, uses Nun as a purifying, sustaining medium for his eternal cycle. Nun is now the "Cool Waters" (𓈗𓏏𓏭𓈖𓎟𓇯𓈌 nunety), a source of cleansing and rebirth. This is why Nun is not merely chaotic; it is the regenerative substance that enables the sun's daily rebirth and the king's ascension. It is cyclical in its function.
Based on the Pyramid Texts, which aspect of Nun feels most fundamental to you?
Nun as the timeless, inert potential before all creation.
Nun as the celestial ocean that surrounds all creation.
Both are inseparable; you cannot have one without the other.
I'm still contemplating the depths...
The Relationship: Neter, Nun, and Maat
Nun and Neter: Nun is the ultimate, undifferentiated neter—the foundational force-substance. Individual neteru like Atum or Ra are specific, differentiated activations of the potential held within Nun. Nun is the ocean; the gods are the waves.
Nun and Maat: This is critical. Maat is the principle of order latent within Nun. Creation is not the imposition of an external order upon a hostile chaos. It is the activation and differentiation of the order already inherent in the potential of Nun. PT 527's description of inert peace ("no terror") shows Nun is not opposed to Maat; Maat is its natural, unfolded state. Nun is the seed, Maat is the fully grown tree encoded within it.
Conclusion: Nun as the Foundation of All
The Pyramid Texts of Unas present Nun as the non-negotiable first cause. It is:
Timeless (the eternal "thereness"),
Inert (the stillness before motion),
Uncreated (the source that itself has no source).
Yet, it is also:
The Cyclical Path for the sun's regeneration.
The Purifying Waters for the king's journey.
The Womb containing the seed of all order (Maat).
To understand Nun is to understand the Egyptian vision of reality: a universe that emerged not from violent struggle, but from the serene, purposeful activation of a boundless, life-giving potential. The journey of the soul—and the path of Ra—is not an escape from Nun, but a eternal navigation upon its sacred, sustaining waters.
This October, we invite you to move from understanding to embodiment on our 7-day Ancient Egypt Healing Tour where you can walk the path of the sacred waters.
The Red Sea: Immerse yourself in the living, healing waters that are the manifest echo of Nun's generative power.
The Black & White Deserts of Bahariya: Stand in the absolute stillness and potential of the desert- Nun's inert, timeless state made manifest as stone and sand.
Saqqara & the Giza Plateau: Finally witness what arises from that potential. At Giza, the apex of cosmic engineering, you will see how the ancients built monuments to harness the cyclical, sustaining power of the celestial Nun.
This is a journey of healing through reconnection to the eternal waters.
